Good Samaritan Society - Jackson

Good Samaritan Society - Jackson
Jackson, MN

In 1955, several Jackson businessmen, in cooperation with the Good Samaritan Society, worked to bring a nursing home to Jackson, Minn.  Jackson Good Samaritan Sunset Home (as it was named then) opened its doors for residents in September 1956.

The 1990s showed a need for change as the needs of our residents changed. We saw an increasing number of short-term stays, and with this focus, our services expanded to include physical, occupational and speech therapies.

In 1996, an addition of 2,500 square feet and a renovation took place to prepare the southwest wing for those with Alzheimer's disease or other related dementias. This part of the nursing home, called The Lighthouse, opened in early 1997.

In December 2000, to keep pace with community needs,  Good Samaritan Society – Jackson purchased The Pines, a 35-apartment  assisted living community; in 2001, we added a duplex and three lots for additional duplexes. In September 2003, Jackson Medical Center announced it would be closing their 21-bed nursing home. We agreed to accept all residents who wished to remain in the Jackson community. The transition was completed in November 2003.

In September 2003, our dietary department began food service for the local Head Start program and added service to Sanford Jackson Medical Center and to the Jackson County Jail in October 2004.

Atop a ridge of rolling hills, Good Samaritan Society – Jackson provides a panoramic view of the Des Moines River Valley. The modified I-shaped center resides on a wide expanse of grass, with trees to provide shade on sunny days. An outdoor area complete with a wonderful gazebo, fish pond, and wheelchair accessible swing is located between wings and an enclosed courtyard for those in the dementia special care unit give ample opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors during mild weather.

Staff members take an active role in this community of 3,500 people, and the City of Jackson reciprocates by providing the best for those who call the center their home. Many volunteers lend hours and hours of time; groups, businesses and individuals give financial support. It is our residents who benefit.
