Good Samaritan Society joins Healthy Aging and Independent Living (HAIL) Lab Consortium

Dec 12, 2011

The Good Samaritan Society has accepted an invitation to become a founding member of the HAIL Lab Consortium, an association dedicated to helping seniors live in their homes as long and as safely as possible.

HAIL stands for Healthy Aging and Independent Living, and founding members also include the Mayo Clinic and Best Buy. The Society’s participation in the initiative was announced Dec. 9, 2011.

The announcement that the Good Samaritan Society joined the consortium came just as the Society opened its new Vivo Innovation Center at its National Campus in Sioux Falls, S.D.

"Really, we joined it knowing that the people who are a part of it are going to be focused on well-being, they're focused on independence and they're focused on safety, which really aligns very well with our organization's perspective," says Bill Anderson, Good Samaritan Society V.P. for Innovation.

"We need to look for new, innovative ways in which we can expand our mutual purposes through new insights that we can learn from one another," says David Horazdovsky, Good Samaritan Society President and CEO.

The Mayo Clinic will host the consortium at its Center for Innovation in Rochester, Minn.

The Society has previously launched innovative projects such LivingWell@Home, a three-year research study that began in 2010 and is evaluating the effectiveness of using sensor technology, telehealth services and personal emergency response systems in helping seniors maintain their wellness.

Information from projects such as LivingWell@Home, combined with information and research from the other consortium members, will provide an unprecented amount of data about healthcare trends, habits and wishes of seniors across the country.

"If not now, when for innovation? If not now, when for connecting to other partners? It's just an ideal time, and if we don't do that, and organizations that don't do that, they're just simply not going to be able to serve people down the road, and we want to be in a position of being stronger five or 10 years from now, rather than struggling to figure out what's next for us," says Anderson.

"This is an exciting time for the Good Samaritan Society," says Horazdovsky. "As we look for ways in which we can care for and advocate for elders."
