(Brainerd, Minn.) – This is an exciting time for long-term care as the Good Samaritan Society seeks to meet the changing needs of seniors. Today, there is a need for housing for people who have fewer medical conditions, and assisted living can meet the needs of those who don’t require extensive nursing home care.
At Good Samaritan Society – Bethany, assisted living services started because community residents wanted additional services to keep them living as independently as possible. With assisted living, an assessment determines a person’s need for services, which can fall into three levels: minimal, moderate or extensive.
Services include:
• Personal services such as assistance with bathing, hygiene and grooming
• Support services such as help with meals, shopping, housekeeping and laundry
• Nursing-related services which include assistance with medications (weekly setup and daily reminders) and health monitoring
The cost for services also includes apartment rent, utilities (except for phone), one meal per day, a personal emergency call system, a monthly wellness check, and basic housekeeping and maintenance assistance. Tenants can participate in center activities such as parties, Bible studies, games and community outings.
Tenants qualify for assisted living if they are 55 or older, are able to make their own decisions, have uncomplicated medical needs, and want as much independence as possible.
Good Samaritan Society apartments have been priced affordably, and assisted living rates are comparable to those of centers in the area.
Providing affordable senior housing with assisted living services to seniors in Brainerd has become another way for the Good Samaritan Society to support the needs of the community and live out its mission to provide shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need.
