(Brainerd, Minn.) – Benjamin Franklin once said there are only two things certain in life: death and taxes. I think he forgot to mention the many transitions we experience in the course of our lives.

A life transition is a passage from one phase or stage to another. In the process, we experience an ending, an in-between stage and, finally, a new beginning. We experience many transitions and it’s no different as we age.

An Oct. 8 seminar is planned to provide support and guidance to older adults and their children experiencing transitions in this stage of life.

You are invited to join us from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Good Samaritan Society – Woodland for Finding Support and Guidance Through Life’s Transitions. There is no charge and a free luncheon will be served.

(Brainerd, Minn.) – Last summer, the Good Samaritan Society received an $8.1 million grant to fund a technology research project at several locations, including the local Brainerd and Pine River campuses.

This is the largest grant received in the Good Samaritan Society’s history. But the grant is just beginning to make history for the Society through the project called LivingWell@Home.

The project is a three-year study that will help the Society evaluate the effectiveness of wellness technologies being developed for seniors. A total of 1,600 seniors will be participating in the research. The first phase started last winter. The second phase in recruiting participants is under way.

(Brainerd, Minn.) – This is an exciting time for long-term care as the Good Samaritan Society seeks to meet the changing needs of seniors. Today, there is a need for housing for people who have fewer medical conditions, and assisted living can meet the needs of those who don’t require extensive nursing home care.

At Good Samaritan Society – Bethany, assisted living services started because community residents wanted additional services to keep them living as independently as possible. With assisted living, an assessment determines a person’s need for services, which can fall into three levels: minimal, moderate or extensive.
