The Good Samaritan Society – Arthur began in 1922 as the birthplace of The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. Founded by the Rev. August “Dad” Hoeger, the Society’s first center, a small home in Arthur, N.D., opened in 1923. Two years later, the newly formed Good Samaritan Society had purchased property on the north side of Arthur and constructed three buildings: one for men, one for women and one for disabled children. Click here for more information about the history of the Good Samaritan Society.

“Lord, what do you want me to do today?” Dad Hoeger referred to this guiding light message to begin the first Good Samaritan Society home. In the face of insurmountable difficulties, the Rev. Hoeger went forward in faith so that seniors and others with pressing needs might know God’s loving care.

There is no want that supersedes the need to feel loved, valued, and at peace with oneself. And there’s no better way to accomplish that than experiencing God’s love in Christ firsthand. Residents, staff members and volunteers become part of a family here at Good Samaritan Society – Arthur, where it is our mission to share God’s love in word and deed.

Today, Good Samaritan Society – Arthur leads in specialized care for seniors in rural areas and is one of the few Good Samaritan Society centers today to continue serving children.
