Resident Burnell Landenberger enjoys experimenting with the new touch-screen technology.
(Bismarck, N.D.) – At Good Samaritan Society – Bismarck, high tech is combining with high touch in the introduction of a computer system designed specifically for seniors. The program has the belief that it’s never too late for one to join the digital revolution. From using e-mail to connect with family and friends, to enjoying mind-stimulating activities and improving hand-eye coordination as part of a rehabilitation program, seniors with a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities, most of whom have never used a computer, are now enjoying technology using systems adapted especially for them.
“For the most part, the generation of elders we serve today has not had that much interaction with the latest technology," says Corinne White, administrator. “It’s a delight to see them get connected, whether it be with Skype, virtual travel, brain fitness programs or even karaoke! Integrating this technology is just one more way we are working to enrich the lives of those we care for here in our community.”
The technology was developed by Colorado-based It’s Never 2 Late (IN2L), a company founded in 1999 that specializes in connecting older adults and their caregivers to the benefits of computers and the internet. IN2L's picture-based, touch screen platform enables almost anyone to use a personal computer, regardless of any physical or cognitive disabilities.
“The Good Samaritan Society – Bismarck joins nursing homes, senior living communities and adult day centers throughout the nation that are using IN2L’s adaptive technology to connect with the older adults they serve,” said Jack York, chief executive officer of IN2L. “We’re convinced this community will be the flagship of our work in the Dakotas. The exploding world of high-tech multimedia provides limitless opportunities for enhancing older adult’s quality of life, particularly individuals dealing with dementia.”
