(Kaneohe, Hawaii) - Michael Kurtz wanted to pay tribute to Hideo Yamashita, Charlie Kimak, Mervyn Lyons and William Clegg in a way that would help residents remember their legacy at Good Samaritan Society - Pohai Nani. So, he found a unique way by purchasing rockers that residents may use every day for social and physical benefit.
See what Michael had to say when giving to Pohai Nani:
“The men I chose to honor were troopers and good people to be around. They were very positive and wonderful residents.
"I also saw the benefits the chairs provided to our residents as a therapeutic treatment: It strengthen their backs, knees and ankles. The simple, yet gentle rocking aided some of the residents in getting stronger and improving their balance. I saw great improvement on a current resident just by rocking on the chair after meals.
"I spoke with Pohai Nani’s Wellness Director, Judy Knutson, about the therapeutic value of using a rocking chair and she agreed about the great benefits of using them. Our former president, John F. Kennedy, was able to heal his back after surgery by using a rocking chair.”
“I enjoyed rocking and meeting with residents after every meal on the balcony. It is a beautiful place to socialize and a gathering spot for the men. Lately, I saw more women taking advantage of the rocking chairs and views when the men were not around. Since we only had two rocking chairs, I saw the need to obtain a few more for residents to enjoy them just like Hideo, Charlie, Merlyn, William and I did.
"Also, by placing their names on each chair, they will have a legacy at Pohai Nani and everyone who loved them will remember them. These additional chairs will provide and enforce more fellowship between residents.”
