Jack’s welcome home to Pohai Nani

(Kaneohe, HI) – Sixty eight years ago, two dozen brave Japanese-American men left their home in Hawaii to fight for the freedom of Americans in World War II. These men were part of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS).

Their heroic service and sacrifice was recognized in Washington D.C. on Nov. 2. The highest civilian award given by Congress was awarded after President Barack Obama signed legislation granting the Congressional Gold Medal to the Japanese-American soldiers of the  100th, 442nd and MIS. The actual medal will be archived at the Smithsonian Institution. Replicas will be given to each of those Hawaii Veterans. Those able to travel to Washington attended the ceremony. A Hawaiian celebration will be held on December 17 with a victory parade in Waikiki.

One of those brave men was none other than our very own hero, resident Jack Nakamura, who is 88 years old. Jack was wounded twice while serving. He recalls how his mother told him not to join the military, but he joined anyway. He is very grateful that this group was being recognized for their service for all they went through.
