Supplying a need for seniors

Jun 06, 2011

When rural seniors in eastern South Dakota need home medical equipment to help with walking, showering and other basic tasks, they have a resource thanks, in part, to Good Samaritan Society - Deuel County in Clear Lake, S.D. The center recently partnered with a local community action organization to purchase $2,000 worth of medical supplies — including walkers, shower chairs, commodes, toilet-seat risers, bedside tables and pill dispensers — for seniors who cannot afford them.

"We're not just a place that cares for people," says Good Samaritan Society - Deuel County Administrator James Block. "Our mission needs to reach out to the community. Christ was all about sending His disciples out into the world."

Staff members at the center knew they wanted to help the community, but weren't sure what the greatest needs were. So Theresa Schake, senior housing manager, contacted Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership (ICAP). ICAP is a not-for-profit organization that works to meet the needs of rural counties in East Central South Dakota. Case worker Audrey Poppen oversees the programs in Deuel County, including food pantries, a school backpack project, and financial and housing assistance programs.
