  • Our shared faith

The Good Samaritan Society continually strengthens our commitment to our mission. We do this by reaffirming a church relationship through our Affiliation Agreement with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

The Society and the ELCA share a common faith. The Affiliation and Recognition agreements provide a framework for greater expression of our shared faith, the exchange of knowledge and the support of common ministries.

The Society’s desire to operate as an independent organization was a major consideration in drafting the Affiliation and Recognition agreements. Under the agreement, the Society is neither owned nor operated by the ELCA. We continue to function as a separate corporation.

Up to six of the Good Samaritan Society’s 16-member Board of Directors are subject to church approval. Once elected, these board members are free to vote on matters of Society business without instruction or direction from the church.

  • We're a Christian organization

The Society is first and foremost a Christian organization. We seek out and hire leaders who are committed to our mission of sharing God’s love in word and deed. Because Christ is at the center of all that we do, the Society requires location administrators and other leaders to be active members of a mainline Christian church. They are not required to attend a Lutheran church.

Church membership is not mandatory for employees at our locations. However, we provide opportunities for interested staff members to grow in their Christian faith. We offer ways for employees to witness with coworkers and residents and to serve in our spiritual programs.

The Affiliation and Recognition agreements strengthen the bonds between Lutheran congregations and Good Samaritan Society locations. Although congregations are not required to support Society centers and programs, we hope that many will choose to do so. Congregational support from all denominations – through prayers, volunteer efforts and donations – is vital to our ministry.

We also seek the involvement of clergy and leaders from various mainline Christian denominations to help us provide spiritual ministry at our locations.

The Good Samaritan Society serves people of all faiths, beliefs and backgrounds.
