Hoeger Scholarships can change employees’ lives
We enjoy having the scholarship option for our location. It has been a huge draw for staff members.” – Amanda Nobles, administrator, Good Samaritan Society – Holstein
The Society awards the Hoeger Scholarship to employees who have gained admission to a regionally accredited college or university. They must also have a goal to become a registered nurse or earn an undergraduate nursing degree.
“The struggle with nursing education and nurse availability is even greater in rural communities,” says Amanda. “The cost and inconvenience factors are greater.”
Several Good Samaritan Society – Holstein employees are attending Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. The campus is 46 miles away from Holstein, or about an hour’s drive one way.
Travis Hersom is a licensed practical nurse who received one of the scholarships in Holstein. He received his RN in May 2019. He hopes to continue in school to get his BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), and possibly continue on to become a CRNP (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner).
I am really grateful for the donors who make this scholarship possible. I am grateful to work for an organization that has a program like the Hoeger Scholarship. Because of the scholarships and my employment with the Good Samaritan Society, I have not needed to take out additional loans.” – Travis Hersom, Good Samaritan Society employee
“The Hoeger Scholarship allows us to secure qualified, dedicated staff while they are in school,” says Amanda. “Someone who wants to pursue a career in nursing is a more dedicated, quality employee in general.”
In 2018, the Society awarded 32 Hoeger Scholarships to employees from 13 locations and six states. Since it was established in 2002, 356 employees have received a Hoeger Scholarship.
