Denton, Texas – Sharon and Doyt Sheets moved to Good Samaritan Society – Lake Forest Village in 2019 when they began to realize that their Lake Dallas home was becoming too much to keep up with after Doyt’s diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease.

After moving into a twin home, the couple started getting involved in activities and meeting new people in the gym or dining room. It was then that Sharon found the colored pencil class. It’s just one of the many programs for residents that the Society would like to expand with the community’s help on North Texas Giving Day, Sept. 17.

Falling in love

Sharon took her first art class 10 years ago and “just fell in love with it.” It was the beginning of her interest in art.

“When I joined the colored pencil class, I was just going to watch,” Sharon said. “Then over time, I began to start trying to replicate what was being done and taught.”

Last year, Sharon created her own Christmas card and shared it with her family. “The class brings me so much joy,” she said. “I have community and learn a new skill at the same time. We all depend on each other to bounce off ideas.”

Building a community

Building community through programming like this, said donor engagement director Laura Wells, is what their North Texas Giving Day participation is all about.

“Our goal is to raise more than $20,000 for programming,” said Wells. “Programs like this build community, which is an important part of well-being. Plus, it’s good for all of us to learn new skills as we age.”

 “I hope that one day we can have more classes and do more with art,” said Sheets. “I think others would truly find how much fun it is.”
