You never really know what’s going to happen when your loved one gets older. We didn’t really have a plan. All of a sudden, you’re faced with a big decision. For us, it just so happened that because her dad, my grandfather, was at Northwood, it was a very easy choice for us to come this way.” – Cindy Seger, daughter of a resident
One couple's plan to age in place
After Lew Weisman’s mother, brother and sister-in-law spent the last decades of their lives at Good Samaritan Society – Northwood Retirement Community, Lew knew he needed to take a long-sighted view of the future for himself and his wife, Dotty.
“My mother spent 10 years at the Good Samaritan Society, which was a reason we bought unlimited time when we bought long-term care insurance,” the 84-year-old says.
“Now we can use it while we are still able to enjoy life and not worry about running out of the three or four years you can buy now.”
Assisted living communities allow you to maintain control of your schedule and choices, but offer the additional comfort of knowing help is available if needed.
When Dotty started losing weight and muscle strength in 2015, the couple knew they needed to start thinking about finding a new home.
As a retired nurse, Dotty knew it was important to continue to care for herself. The Weismans had lived in their house for 58 years though, and had many fond memories of life there.
But Lew remembered that his family had enjoyed life at Northwood Retirement Community, so the couple attended an open house. After that, Lew and Dotty decided to make the move.
And now, all of their planning has paid off—more than Lew imagined it would.
Dotty would not come without me, and I figured it would take about six months until I was pushing daisies in a nursing facility. For the first time in my life…I was wrong!" — Lew Weisman, assisted living resident
Like many older adults, Lew was worried about being able to maintain his own routine when he moved onto a long-term care campus. But he was also concerned about the future. He wanted a balance of independence and care, but wasn’t sure if this was possible. In this, too, he’s been pleasantly surprised.
“We are both amazed at how the staff gives help where it is needed and to those who need it,” he says.
“I really enjoy not having to shop, prepare meals and clean the house,” Dotty says. “Everything here is on a level floor, even the apartment. It feels like home.”
And as for the apartment, Lew says the space and amenities are just right. Tall ceilings add to the rooms, and heavy doors with good insulation make it pretty soundproof. The second bedroom is Lew’s computer room; having wireless internet service is another benefit for these Netflix fans.
All in all, Lew says he’s happy to be at Good Samaritan Society – Northwood Retirement Community. There’s only one thing that seems to be missing.
“I have bragged on the place so much that I should get a sales commission,” he jokes.
