The rain started on a Sunday night.

At first, Delores Berg wasn't worried. Then, the Iowa home she'd lived in for decades began to flood.

Her neighbors helped her move things up from the lower level, but they didn’t know how severe the storm would become.

I knew I just had to buck up, that things were going to be better, and the Lord was going to provide for me.” – Delores Berg, City Center resident

In the aftermath, Delores’s house was deemed unsalvageable.

    She was homeless.

    Putting life back together

Delores moved in with her daughter in Sioux Falls, and slowly put her life back together.

Delores and her daughter began to search for an apartment, but they had trouble finding anything.

She was ready to take the first option that appeared in her price range when she saw a local news story. City Center, the Good Samaritan Society's affordable housing property in Sioux Falls, was featured.

It’s a great place, and it’s home to me. Everyone has something that they do and that they love." – Delores Berg

Delores thought it looked great, and soon she moved in.

"For me, City Center was the answer to my prayers," Delores says. "And the Good Samaritan Society, I just can’t say enough good about them.”

    Affordable housing facts:

    • Minimum age ranges from 50 to 62.
    • Residents must have limited incomes. The limits vary depending on which federal programs the property participates in and what units are available on the property.
    • All applicants undergo background and credit checks.

    Forging new 'family' bonds

At first, she was worried about being away from the home she'd known for so long. But Delores soon found that City Center was full of opportunities.

With no yard work, snow removal, and with utilities included in the cost of rent, she found herself at home.

Not only that, Delores now had access to Lifeline personal emergency response support, in case of a fall or other emergency.

Perhaps most importantly, she quickly formed friendships and bonds with other residents at City Center.

“It’s a great place, and it’s home to me. Everyone has something that they do and that they love," Delores says. "We’re just all a family. I’m with a family here."
