Independent living communities provide seniors the freedom they want, along with maintenance-free living. The decision to move to a senior living community is an emotional and tedious life altering decision. This checklist will help relieve some of the pressure as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of life.
Step one: Preparing for the move
The first step is doing research on the different independent living communities in your desired location. Which communities fit your budget? Meet with the facility’s manager to discuss the total cost and map out a plan for monthly payments. Take the time to have open and honest conversations regarding the move with family members. Discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
Step two: Assess your needs and preferences
Consider what you are looking for in an independent living community. Determine the level of care you will need. What services and amenities will you want? Is the location close to family? Are there health care facilities nearby? Is the kitchen in your new living space furnished? Are meals served? These are all things to consider when scheduling visits to senior living locations. The Good Samaritan Society offers a variety of independent living options in our senior living communities.
Step three: Downsizing
Once you’ve decided on a facility and scheduled a move-in date, start organizing your belongings. Start sorting your items into three groups: keep, donate, trash. Consider holding a garage sale and ordering a dumpster for junk removal. If needed, think about reserving a storage unit. If you are struggling to get started, consider hiring a professional organizer or a downsizing specialist.
Step four: Planning the move
If you need assistance with the move, be sure to schedule the movers and transportation. Fill out the U.S. Postal Service change of address paperwork and schedule the disconnection of all the utilities. If you are moving out of the area notify your physicians and ask for referrals in the new location. Be sure to gather all your important documents (medical records, financial documents, etc.).
Step five: Transition to the community
Coordinate with the community staff regarding the move-in logistics and get familiar with the community’s rules and regulations. Take a break from moving by meeting with the staff and introducing yourself to fellow residents.
Step six: Getting settled
Start by unpacking your essentials for the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and living room. Get those familiar items out to personalize your living space. If possible, set up a nook with a chair or sofa that has good natural lighting. This space can be decorated with pictures or heirlooms that bring you joy. Be sure to step outside your living space to explore the community and take part in activities to meet fellow residents.
Step seven: Post-move adjustments
The move itself only takes a day. The plan for the move can take weeks or months. The time it takes to get comfortable in your new environment can take even longer. Allow yourself that time to get adjusted to your new home. Be sure to communicate any concerns or questions you have with the community staff. Alert the staff about any difficulties you may be having getting adjusted. Even though you are in a new home, you are not on a deserted island. Stay connected with your family and friends.
