Adult Day Services

A helpful alternative to full-time care

Adult day service programs offer daytime respite services that enable primary caregivers (spouse, family, or friends) to work, run errands or have a break from their caregiving duties.

Participants can socialize and receive some health services in a stimulating and supportive environment. These adult day services are designed to help people maintain independence, strength, and function and are a cost-effective alternative to full-time long-term care.

What are adult day services?

A type of respite care, the Good Samaritan Society's Adult Day Services offer programming to help people maintain independence, strength and function through a short-term (less than 24-hour) stay. Services can include:

  • exercise programs
  • meals and snacks
  • social activities
  • mental stimulation activities
  • assistance with dressing and/or grooming
  • bathing
  • occupational, speech or physical therapies

Adult day services programs generally operate during normal business hours, five days a week, allowing caregivers to remain in the workforce, run errands or enjoy a break during the day.

What are adult day services?

Adult day services vs. respite care

Adult day services are for clients needing less than 24 hours of assistance. Respite care is available for more than 24 hours at a time, typically up to 14 days.

In addition, if you plan to use adult day services regularly, you won't need to complete paperwork each time. With respite care, each time you use the service you must complete new paperwork.

  • Payments

Because billing and payment options for respite and adult day services can vary from state to state and agency to agency, you'll need to check your insurance for specific options available.

  • Levels of Care

Adult day services and respite care can both include social, health and Alzheimer's care. In some cases, therapeutic rehabilitation services may be available.

The biggest difference between adult day services and respite care involves the amount of time the person needs and receives care and services.
