Giving for Good. Giving for Home.

For 86-year-old Shirley Krier, giving to Good Samaritan – St. Martin Village in Rapid City, South Dakota, was an easy decision.

That’s because for Shirley, St. Martin Village is more than a home — it’s a community she cherishes in an area she loves.

“The location is absolutely gorgeous. I walk almost three miles every day on the path,” she said. “It’s like I live out in a cabin in the hills.”

The right move at the right time

After working as a nursing leader for the Veteran’s Administration, Krier moved into a twin home on the St. Martin Village campus in 2012. For a time, she even worked part time in the kitchen at the nearby St. Martin Monastery.

Now, the monastery kitchen she used to work in is used to serve residents of Good Samaritan. The organization bought the building from the Benedictine Sisters in 2023, renovated it and reopened in 2025 as Unity Place, bringing more senior services to the Rapid City region.

Gifts from the heart

Inspired by her experience and the mission of Good Samaritan, Shirley began giving through the Good Samaritan Foundation in 2017. She’s continued to do so ever since and today her generosity is at work in beautiful ways throughout St. Martin Village, supporting everything from enhancements to services, meaningful programming, facility improvements and so much more.

“At this point in my life, I really wouldn’t want to live anywhere else,” Shirley said. “This place has given me more than just a home — it’s given me a community, treasured friendships and so much more. I give what I can because I want others to feel as safe and loved as I do here.”

Together with her sister, Donna Krier Ebeling, Shirley also made a gift to the Unity Place project in memory of their brothers, LeRoy Krier and Robert Krier.

“For so long, the St. Martin Monastery served as a haven for the Benedictine Sisters who did so much to care and serve others,” Shirley said. “My sister and I love that now, this
property is beginning a new chapter — providing care to seniors. It’s an honor to support this project.”

Ali Hofer serves as vice president for the Good Samaritan Foundation. She called Shirley’s generosity an inspiration.

“Shirley’s giving is a reflection of her kind heart, her compassionate nature and her belief in the power of community. Her generosity not only ensures that St. Martin Village feels like home for everyone who walks through its doors, it also brings care, comfort and connection to the residents, patients and families we serve. As a nonprofit health care system, support from friends like Shirley plays a critical role in advancing our mission. We are deeply grateful.”
