An unexpected gift from generous donors in Chicago reinforced the power of the benevolent care fund at Good Samaritan Society – Loveland Village in Colorado.

Ruth and Harry’s mother, Josephine, had been a resident first in assisted living and then skilled nursing. Toward the end of her life, she was struggling to cover her rent each month. The Good Samaritan Society’s benevolent care program was able to help, eventually providing two-thirds of her rent in the last months of Josephine's life.

Ruth learned of the assistance her mother received only after her death. She was so moved by the kindness shown by staff members and management in Josephine's time of need that Ruth felt compelled to give back.

In the process of planning her estate, Ruth reached out to the Good Samaritan Foundation. She established a trust that will result in a percentage of her estate supporting benevolent care endowment funds. Knowing that others could be helped in the same way as her mother brought Ruth joy and peace of mind.

A variety of circumstances, including government funding limitations, create a situation where the Good Samaritan Society provides significant services for residents without any reimbursement. Benevolent care gifts help sustain financial stability while the Society continues to meet the needs of our most vulnerable population. To protect the dignity and privacy of residents, the Society does not reveal their names. But their stories share a common thread: all have basic, human needs as a result of financial difficulties beyond their control.

The gift from Ruth and Harry is a testament to the distinct way the Society cares for residents. The benevolent care program exists to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to feel loved, valued and at peace, regardless of finances.
