Charlie* discovered (888) GSS-CARE, the number for the Good Samaritan Society’s Connection Center through a television ad. He made a call and talked with Betsy, one of the staff, about whether there were Good Samaritan Society services near his home. While there weren’t, there was something about Betsy that touched him. He asked if he could call again.
It was a beginning
Charlie called back about six months later. His wife had just had surgery. While the procedure saved her life, it left her paralyzed. He needed to talk.
Through their conversations, Betsy learned more of his story. Both Charlie and his wife were veterans. He was struggling to help his wife and himself. He felt lonely and isolated by the responsibilities of caring for his wife.
“Our conversations were short,” said Betsy. “But he always ended by telling me that it felt good just to ‘get this out.’”
